On January 1, 22 states in the U.S. will raise their minimum wages, benefiting approximately 9.9 million workers and resulting in an additional $6.95 billion in wages. The majority of the beneficiaries, about 57.9%, are women. The wage increases will have a more significant impact on Black and Hispanic workers, who represent a larger proportion of those receiving increases compared to their overall workforce percentages. These changes will notably affect the care industry, where a high percentage of workers are women, Black, and Hispanic.
